How To Cleanse Your Crystals

Cleansing your crystals is very important and there are many ways to do so. Crystals absorb positive and negative energy from their surroundings, people who handle them and the process it went through to end up in your hands (from the miner to the retail store and all in-between). Crystals also need to be cleansed before and after you use them for healing or meditation. Unless they are regularly cleansed, they will hold onto these energies. Furthermore, a crystal may even tell you that it needs to be cleansed - their colour may fade or seem dull, and they just won't feel right to you. Below are some methods you can use to cleanse your crystal and bring back their natural energies.

Immersing your crystals in the smoke of burning Sage or Palo Santo is an easy and popular way to cleanse them. Hold your crystal in the smoke for about 1 minute or until you feel it's vibration start to shift. This method is useful when wanting to cleanse lots of crystals at once as you can blow or waft the smoke over a group of them.

Planting your crystals into the Earth is a no-brainer. Not only can it release any unwanted energy it's accumulated into the earth to dissipate, but it's like returning your crystal to it's "home". Bury it in the earth, or in a garden bed or indoor pot plant for 24 hours. Don't use this method for fragile or water-soluble crystals as the soil may be damp.

There are some crystals that can help cleanse others in your collection. Selenite, Citrine, Carnelian and Clear Quartz can all cleanse your other crystals. This works best if you have a large plate or cluster in one of the four mentioned crystals, to place your smaller stones on. You can also pop a tumbled Carnelian into a soft bag with your other tumbles to help cleanse them. I often place my jewellery and pendulums on large clusters to be cleansed and energised. Don't forget to then cleanse your cleansing crystals afterwards too!

You can use a singing bowl, gongs or bells to change the vibration of your crystals and cleanse them of lower energies.

Water from a natural source is preferable but tap water will work too. Hold your crystals in the running water and visualise the negative energies washing away. Remember, not all stones can be placed in water! When it rains, pop a bowl out to collect the water and use it to cleanse your crystals - it will soon become the first thing you think of when it rains.

Pop your crystals in a place where they will be exposed to the rays of the sun and moon for 2-4 hours, or overnight for the moon. Remember that the colour of some crystals will fade in the sun so don't leave them there all day. Even if you cannot see the moon, this method will still work and you may find its more effective at a particular moon phase (full is popular!).

Placing your crystals in a bowl of rice or salt is a safe way to cleanse them, particularly for water-soluble crystals. The salt and rice draws away any negative energy your crystals hold. Do not cook or consume the rice/salt once you have removed your stones!

As with most energy work your intention is key here. As you perform any of the cleansing methods above you need to hold the intention that your chosen method is cleansing your crystals of any accumulated, negative or unwanted energy. Visualisation is also very powerful. Your crystals will be back to their sparkling selves in no time!
